ZIPeeker
version 1.0.0.0
While rearranging my computers' directories, I discovered I had over 3000 ZIP files that I've downloaded over the years. I had a pretty good idea what some of them were, but the rest...well...a filename like di9905kw.zip doesn't say a whole lot about the contents.
It is such a pain open each ZIP, determining the contents, closing it and then renaming it, that I decided to write a little program to streamline it a bit.
ZIPeeker is the result.
Just a few easy steps:
- Select a drive and directory from the Drive & Directory list
- Select a ZIP file from the Files list
- Look over the files listed on the right to determine the contents of the ZIP archive
- Type in a new, more descriptive filename in the Rename field
- Press the
button to rename the file.
That's all there is to it!
Other things you can do:
- Double-click a filename on the right to view or run it as if it were extracted already
- Check the Show Hints box to show flyover hints for each control
- Uncheck the View with associated program box to use the internal text viewer to see the contents of the ZIPped files
- Check the List Auto-Extractors box to include .exe files in the Files list (not all .exe files are self-extracting ZIPs, of course)
- Check the Use ZIPeeker\Temp box to store temporary files under the ZIPeeker\Temp directory, instead of the Windows temp directory (or, in the case of XP, the ZIP file directory)
Issues:
- You need write permissions on any directory ZIPeeker will use for temporary files. If you don't have that permission, use the internal viewer (uncheck the View with associated program box).
- ZIP files with a huge number of files archived take a looooong time to view. Be patient.
